Whatever your level of experience or your reasons for wanting to take a class, it’s best to start with Core Technique, which grounds you in fundamentals you will rely on throughout your acting career. You will learn by doing, warming up with games and exercises that get you out of your head and into your body, while activating your emotional and physical capacity to interpret dramatic texts.

An introduction to the fundamentals of text analysis helps you unlock the mechanics of a script and identify key concepts like given circumstances, conflict, and the actions characters take to achieve their objective. Techniques for loosening up body, voice, and imagination help you bring full expression to your performance, while monologue and scene work strengthen your ability to integrate feedback, learn from your colleagues, and contribute to a spirit of ensemble. Building on these fundamental techniques enables both serious beginners and experienced actors to exercise and grow their craft.

Working with Adam profoundly improved my acting through the understanding of text. It improved my ability to grasp the purpose of a scene in the context of the play, and to act with more intention and specificity. My confidence as an actor greatly benefited from this.
— Martin Bäcker, Actor and Coach
Adam’s classes are full of creative and positive energy. Working on these great American plays and writing has been very inspiring for me and has helped me grow as an actress.
— Silvana Damm, Actor

Specific exercises and activities will include:
-Introduction to voice, speech, and movement for the actor.
-Rigorous application of script analysis to break down dramatic structure of plays and scenes.
-Paired work on scripted scenes from modern American plays. Scenes may be rehearsed and performed in a format adapted for remote learning on the Zoom video conferencing platform.
-Individualized feedback on all in-class work and opportunities to refine performance skills in a supportive setting.

To enable all participants to work intensively during each class, enrollment is limited to a maximum of twelve students. You should expect to work at least one hour each week outside of class on readings and assigned scenes.

Instructors: Adam Ludwig, Brian Bell

The course is conducted in English. Students are encouraged to contribute ideas or ask questions in German or French. Copies of readings, assigned scenes, and plays will be provided.
